CHAPTER 12

Okay so maybe Darius had underestimated how the girls would react to him taking them to Anya’s dance class. Anya sulked the entire way and Zoe cried. Still he felt better knowing Ben had time to just relax for a while before they returned. He’d even insisted on picking up dinner, so Ben didn’t have to do anything. The only problem was he hadn’t thought to ask what Ben might like. They’d just had pizza so that wouldn’t work.

Hoping for a more positive response than he’d been getting so far, he asked the girls. “I’m going to pick up dinner on the way home. What would you both like?”

“Pizza,” yelled Zoe.

“We just had it, dork,” Anya said.

Darius winced at the derogatory remark. He knew brother and sisters often fought and called each other names, but it didn’t sit well with him. “Anya, please don’t talk to your sister like that.” He knew it would probably put Anya in a worse mood, but he just couldn’t sit idly by and say nothing.

He was surprised when she apologized. “Sorry Uncle Darius. I usually try not to do it in front of you,” she admitted.

“I appreciate that, but I would appreciate it more if you didn’t do it at all.” At least she was trying some of the time. “Now what would you like for dinner?”

A family in his church owned a small Mexican restaurant that made the best food in Texas. “Are enchiladas okay?” He could order a platter but if the girls would like something else he would break down and call Ben to see what he’d like.

Zoe jumped up. “Yum. I love enciledies.”

“Enchiladas, do-” Anya caught herself. Glancing at Darius she finished, “darling.”

He gave her a wink before opening the door to let them in. He was surprised when they went to a room that was empty. “I thought you had class?”

She shrugged. “Miss Tammy is letting me practice by myself right now.”

Now he was confused. “Why?”

Anya looked down at her feet. “Because I don’t want to be around the other kids with their moms watching from the hall.”

He felt like shit for bringing it up. At the same time, he realized just how hard of a time these kids were having. For the last week he’d come over every day helping with dinner and homework, but he really hadn’t done a good job at finding out how they were coping.

Unwilling to embarrass her any further by making a big deal of it, Darius said, “Okay.” A chair sat in the corner, just where Ben had said it would be. At least the man had warned him that Anya preferred he stay in the room. He’d just failed to mention she was the only one dancing.

Zoe spread her coloring book and crayons on the floor next to him. It took her several minutes to decide on a page before she went to work coloring. As
